African Mission Fathers - Society of African Missions (SMA)
Founded by Bishop Melchior de Marion Brésillac in 1856 in Lyons, France. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Perth from Cork, Ireland, by Archbishop Redmond Prendiville and Fr John Creaven SMA in 1963. First community established at Beaconsfield. Sends missionaries to Africa.
Benedictine Monks - Subiaco Congregation of the Order of St Benedict (OSB)
Prayer is the primary work of the monastery. Monks are also engaged in a variety of pastoral work, in manual labour in the house and gardens, in studies and administration, and in a number of crafts. An important apostolate is the monastery guesthouse, where visitors can make private or directed retreats, or just enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. The monastery is developing the township into a centre of heritage and culture. The historic buildings, the art gallery and museum are appreciated by large numbers of visitors.
Carmelite Friars - Order of Discalced Carmelites (OCD)
Founded by St Teresa of Avila in 1562 in Spain. In 1568, St John of the Cross began the first house of the Discalced Carmelite Friars. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Brisbane from Ireland in 1948. First WA community established at Morley Parish in 1956.
Carmelites - The Order of Brothers of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (OCarm)
Founded by a group of hermits in the 12th century on Mount Carmel, Israel. The first written rule was given by St Albert of Jerusalem in c. 1209. Introduced to Australia in the Diocese of Adelaide from Dublin, Ireland, in 1881. First WA community established at Hilton Parish in 1956.
Dominicans - Order of Preachers (OP)
Founded by St Dominic Guzman in 1216 in Toulouse, France. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Adelaide from Ireland by Fr (later Archbishop) Robert Spence OP in 1898. First WA community established at Innaloo Parish in 1954.
Franciscan Friars - Order of Friars Minor (OFM)
Founded by St Francis of Assisi in 1209 in Assisi, Italy. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Sydney from Ireland in 1879. First WA community established at Midland Parish in 1950.
Franciscan Friars - Polish Community - Order of Friars Minor (OFM)
Introduced to the Archdiocese of Perth 1973.
Jesuits - Society of Jesus (SJ)
Founded by St Ignatius Loyola in 1540 in Rome, Italy. Introduced to Australia in the Diocese of Adelaide from Austria by Fr Alois Kranewitter SJ in 1848. First WA community established at St Louis School, Claremont, in 1938.
Marist Fathers - Society of Mary (SM)
Founded by Venerable Fr Jean-Claude Colin in 1816 in Lyons, France. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Sydney from France by Fr Antoine Dubreul SM and Fr Jean Louis Rocher SM in 1845. First WA community established at Redcliffe Parish in 1956.
Norbertine Canons - Canons Regular of Prémontré (OPraem)
Founded by St Norbert of Xanten in 1120 in Prémontré, France. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Perth from Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott, Ireland, in 1959. First community established at York Parish.
Oblates of Mary Immaculate - Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of the Most Holy and Immaculate Virgin Mary (OMI)
Founded by St Eugene de Mazenod in 1816 in Aix, France. Introduced to Australia in the Diocese of Perth from Dublin, Ireland, by Bishop Matthew Gibney in 1894. First community established at Fremantle Parish.
Redemptorists - Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (CSsR)
Founded by St Alphonsus Liguori in 1732 in Scala, Italy. Introduced to Australia in the Diocese of Maitland by Fr Edmund Vaughan CSsR in 1882. First WA community established at North Perth in 1899.
Salesians - Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB)
Founded by St John Bosco in 1859 in Turin, Italy. Introduced to Australia in the Vicariate of Kimberley (now the Diocese of Broome) from Italy by Bishop Ernest Coppo SDB in 1923. First community in Perth Archdiocese established at Victoria Park Parish in 1985.
Salvatorians - Society of the Divine Saviour (SDS)
Founded by Fr Francis Jordan SDS in 1881 in Rome, Italy. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Perth from England by Fr Paul Keyte SDS in 1961. First community established at Bellevue (now Greenmount) Parish.
Servite Friars - Order of Friar Servants of Mary (OSM)
Priests and Brothers of Mendicant Tradition. Founded by the Seven Holy Founders in 1233 in Florence, Italy. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Perth by Very Rev James Keane OSM in 1951. First community established at Wanneroo Parish.
Somascans - Order of the Clerics Regular of Somasca (CRS)
Founded by St Jerome Emiliani in 1534 in Somasca, Italy. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Perth from Italy by Archbishop Barry James Hickey in 2004. First community established at Spearwood Parish.
Vincentian Congregation (India) (VC)
Founded by Rev Fr Varkey Kattarath in 1904 in Kerala, India. Introduced to Australia in the Archdiocese of Perth from Kerala, India in 2008. First community established at St Aloysius Parish, Shenton Park.
