On the morning of February 12 there took place a moving ceremony in St Mary’s Cathedral. The occasion was to commemorate the killing of 24 parishioners of St Mark and St Peter Coptic Orthodox Church in Alexandria, Egypt. This took place just after midnight on January 1st as they were leaving the Church. They had just attended a New Year’s service. More than 100 were also injured.
Fr Abram Abdelmalek gave a passionate speech to those in attendance, decrying the massacre. Archbishop Hickey and members of other denominations present, joined in prayer for the local Coptic Orthodox community here in Perth and those in Egypt that they may experience the peace and consolation of the Lord during this difficult time of tragedy.
