Organisation Details

From its inception in 2007, the Archdiocesan Historical Commission focused its work on the collection of oral histories and the publication of works which tell the story of the Archdiocese's early history and founders. Over time it has expanded its purview to include professional conservation advice on built and movable cultural heritage such as historic buildings, identifying and celebrating historical events and creating heritage signage.

The Archdiocesan Historical Commission was initiated by decree of the Most Reverend Barry James Hickey, Archbishop of Perth, on 14 August 2007. The central responsibility of the Commission was the 'gathering, recording, storing and publishing' of the history of the Archdiocese.

The inaugural members of the Commission were: Rev Fr Brian O'Loughlin VG (Chair), Rev Fr Patrick Cunningham STL, Rev Dr Kevin Long, Professor Paul Skerritt, Dr Shane Burke, and Sr Frances Stibi (Archdiocesan Archivist - ex officio member). Within the next three years Justice Kevin Hammond, Mrs Ruth Marchant James, Fr Robert Cross and Mr Odhran O'Brien (Secretary) were also invited to become members.

During 2015 the Commission's first historical works will be published and launched. If you are interested in purchasing either the biography of Archbishop Patrick Clune CSsR, the first Archbishop of Perth, or Bishop Martin Griver, the second Bishop of Perth, please use the email address below.
