History

The Order of the Sisters of Mercy was established by Venerable Catherine McAuley in Dublin in 1831. The first Australian Foundation was in Perth in 1846. Over subsequent decades, many other foundations were made throughout Australia and Papua New Guinea. On December 12th, 2011 fourteen of the Mercy Congregations in Australia, including the former Perth and West Perth Congregations, and the region of Papua New Guinea relinquished their autonomy and created the Institute of Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea.
