Our HistoryEMMANUEL (means "GOD WITH US") Centre, how it all began? In response to the call by United Nations for the International Year of Disabled Persons (IYDP), in the October of 1980 a Catholic committee was formed. This committee for the IYPD was made up of representatives from the various Church groups within the Archdiocese already working with people with disabilities. During that period it was realized that efforts towards people with disabilities needs and support for their families within the church were either not being met or were fragmented. A survey conducted for people with disabilities, their families and those groups working for people with disabilities suggested the establishment of a centre. Then a submission was made to the Archbishop Goody of the day through the then Director of Centrecare, Rev. Fr Barry Hickey. EMMANUEL CENTRE was formed. The doors at the Emmanual Centre were opened on 7th September 1981. Followed by it's first news letter, this was because many people were calling to seek information on a variety of aspects relating to disabled people and also in relation services provided by the centre. The official opening of the EMMANUEL CENTRE took place on Sunday the 6th December 1981 at 4.00PM. Archbishop Goody presided the Eucharist followed by a light supper.
